For my San Francisco trip, I decided to only travel with backpacks. I did not have a travel backpack big enough for one-bag travel, so I decided to use a personal item-sized backpack and a separate camera bag. This way, I could test the size of a 10x10 (actually 10x8 for this 8-day trip) capsule. As a note, the backpack I used was slightly deeper than the actual personal item size, and I used a sling-style camera bag with space for my Canon Rebel T6 and 3 lenses. I used IKEA packing cubes for my clothes, and everything fit very well. Overall, my backpack was fully packed (so over the size of a personal item), but I think this was mostly a byproduct of overpacking other items I wouldn't normally bring, such as an extra pair of sneakers. I did, however, leave these in San Francisco. Don't worry, it was planned! I knew it was going to rain a lot, so I bought a pair of Timberlands. However, those are heavy, so I also brought some very dirty walking shoes that I planned to leave in San Francisco. This also served as a physical placeholder and limit for how many souvenirs I could bring back home.
10x8 Capsule
- top + layer + bottom = 4 x 2 x 3 = 24 combinations
- tee + shirt + bottom = 1 x 1 x 3 = 3 combinations
- tee/shirt + sweater + pants = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 combinations
